Barbara E. (Carter) Roderick
Barbara Roderick of Somerville went to be with Our Lord on August 27, 2016. Beloved wife of the late John A. Roderick for nearly 65 years, she was the mother of the late Lana D. Roderick-Gilbert, Mark O. Roderick and his wife Linda of Simsbury CT, and John Alan Roderick and his wife Heather of Somerville, MA. Born January 28, 1926 in Goldthwaite, Mills County, Texas, she was the sixth of 10 children--and eldest daughter--of the late Johnny and Leona (Moore) Carter, of Goldthwaite, TX. She was the beloved sister of James and Avril Carter, Mary Jo Melton-Hamilton, Charlotte Davis, Leona Mae Walton, and the late John Ralph, Alfred, Joe Drake and Garth Carter.Barbara is survived also by her 7 grandchildren and 3 great-grandchildren as well as numerous nieces, nephews and other relatives and friends, all of whom she loved dearly.She attended school in Center City, TX and graduated from Goldthwaite High School in 1943, after which she attended nursing school at Scott and White Hospital in Temple, TX. It was there in late 1943 that she met her husband John A. Roderick. They were married Sept. 10, 1944 in Somerville, MA. She lived in East Cambridge and Somerville for the next 72 years until the time of her passing. She worked as an associate at the Men's Store at Filene's in Downtown Boston for nearly 25 years, retiring in 1986. Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to attend visiting hours at the Rogers Funeral Home, 380 Cambridge Street, Cambridge, MA on Tuesday, August 30, 2016 from 1:00-3:00 PM and 6:00-8:00 PM. Service at the Somerville Community Baptist Church, 31 College Ave., Somerville on Wednesday, August 31, 2016 at 11AM with burial afterward at Calvary Cemetery in Winchester.
